The 2017 Summer NAMM Show is ready to take over the Music City Center in Nashville, TN from July 13-15.
Among the hundreds of exhibitors, who will be showcasing over 1,600 different brands, are a host of Canadian companies, which Canadian Music Trade has highlighted below. Of course, show favourites, such as the Top 100 Dealer Awards and NAMM U educational sessions are returning where attendees can learn best practices and other tricks to help them boost their businesses ahead of the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons.
To help folks get prepared for the trip, here is a list of special events and initiatives to be aware of that are happening at this year’s Summer NAMM:
Retail Boot Camp
Wednesday, July 12
Held before Summer NAMM begins, Retail Boot Camp is an intensive one-day training program that will provide exclusive tips, tricks, and information to attendees to grow their music retail business. Following the format first introduced last year, Retail Boot Camp at Summer NAMM will feature two different tracks: Sales and Marketing and Financial Management.
In the Sales and Marketing track, small business guru Jon Schallert will present an interactive program specifically customized for NAMM members. Attendees will discover a proven strategy for transforming their music store into a destination business.
In the Financial Management track, Alan Friedman, CPA, and Daniel Jobe will cover the most critical financial components of running a music retail business. The Financial Management track isn’t just for store owners; it’s for any retail staff or retail advisers who want to learn more about the financial challenges facing music retailers of all types and sizes.
Top 100 Dealer Awards
Friday, July 14 – Karl F. Dean Grand Ballroom
The Top 100 Dealer Awards celebrate the best of the best in music retail. Open to all Summer NAMM attendees, this event showcases musical talent, star power, and memorable moments from an international group of retail honourees. At the awards gala, The Top 100 Dealers will be honoured, which this year includes five Canadian businesses: Bluedog Guitars, Cosmo Music, Merriam Music, Ottawa Pianos, and Wentworth Music.
From the Top 100 honorees, seven music retailers will be recognized in “Best Of” categories for Best Store Turnaround, Best Customer Service, Best Store Design, Best Marketing and Sales Promotion, Best Online Engagement, Best Emerging Dealer/Rookie of the Year, and one recipient will be honoured with the Music Makes a Difference award. The coveted Dealer of the Year award will go to one of the recipients in the aforementioned categories.
TEC Tracks features pro audio education for recording, live sound, and music industry professionals across all three days of the show. This includes free masterclasses, live interviews, and panel discussions held right on the show floor. On the Saturday, A3E (Advanced Audio + Applications Exchange) presents the full-day Future of Audio Summit.
There will be 22 TEC Tracks sessions in total, featuring such topics as: The Female Voice – On Stage and in the Studio; Vinyl Mastering Panel; On the Fly Looping; In-Ear Monitoring Fundamentals & Safe Sound; Sound Check Decisions & Critical Listening; and more.
Dante Training & Certification
For established and aspiring pro audio professionals, Audinate, the creator of the Dante media networking technology, will introduce a new advanced Level 3 Dante Certification course as part of this year’s Summer NAMM. The new advanced track is geared toward attendees that are already using Dante and are looking to create more advanced systems and learn best practices. Audinate will make available the Dante Certification courses Level 1 and 2. All three of these courses will be taught on Friday, July 14 and again on Saturday, July 15. 34th Annual American Eagle Awards
Thursday, July 13, 6 p.m. – Music City Center
The National Music Council will honour Grammy-winning songstress Crystal Gayle, singer-songwriter and poet Patti Smith, and comic, actor, writer, musician, and creators’ rights activist Harry Shearer at the 34th annual American Eagle Awards at Summer NAMM. The awards are presented each year in recognition of long-term contribution to American musical culture and heritage, the importance of music education for all children, and the need to protect creators’ rights, both locally and internationally.
The honorees will be celebrated during Summer NAMM’s Opening Night Party at the Music City Center, which is open to industry members, Summer NAMM attendees, and the general public.
Music Industry Day
Saturday, July 15
Professionals and students from across the music and audio industries will be able to attend 2017 Summer NAMM to discover new products, attend educational workshops, catch live music, and network to form new relationships. Attendees will be able to participate in a variety of recreational music making activities while building their business networks.
Advanced Audio Microphones – Booth 331
Advanced Audio Microphones is a grass-roots, family-run Canadian company. The efficient design and uncompromised sound of its microphones is due to 45 years of experience plus the sound engineering expertise of company CEO and designer Dave Thomas. At Summer NAMM, it will show its line of dynamic, tube, and FET microphones and mic preamps.
Godin Guitars – Booth 1023
Godin Guitars will be showcasing the latest additions to its brands of guitars, including a new limited run of electric guitars from their Custom Shop. On the acoustic side, the new Arena Series thinline nylon guitars from the La Patrie brand will be presented. Additional acoustic instruments include the preamp-equipped Seagull S8 mandolin and M4 Dulcimer. A new 75-W version of the Acoustic Solutions amplifier will also be on display.
Gon Bops – Booth 215
Gon Bops hits the 2017 Summer NAMM show with an exciting range of percussion instruments designed for unmatched quality and sound. Signature artist Daniel de los Reyes (Zac Brown Band) will make an appearance to showcase Gon Bops instruments in a roots/country setting. He will feature a number of his signature instruments, including the DDLR cajon, a new tambourine, and shakers.
IMSTA – Booth 254
The International Music Software Trade Association (IMSTA) invites attendees to its booth in the Software.NAMM room to see what the Toronto-based industry organization is planning for 2018 and beyond. In January at Winter NAMM 2018, for the third year in a row, IMSTA will partner with NAMM to host the rapidly growing Software.NAMM. IMSTA has scheduled 2018 IMSTA FESTA music technology shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Miami, Toronto, and is debuting Berlin, Germany.
Levy’s Leathers – Booth 1113
Levy’s Leathers will be showing its New For 2017 collection of guitar straps at Summer NAMM. The 28 new models include the MSSC80-BLK/WHT straps that feature cowboy boot leather ends with a cotton cable-knit pattern. The MS317EMP (Empire) straps feature contrasting triple decorative stitching combined with subtle hand-brushed suede shades. Also, for 2017, Levy’s has brought back the MS17AIF (Spirit) straps, which were discontinued two years ago. The Spirit strap is Native North America-inspired and feature soft suede with soft suede fringe.
Perri’s Leathers – Booth 1422
Perri’s Leathers is a family business that produces licensed guitar and instrument straps along with picks and other accessories. The company’s catalog includes over 700 products. At the Summer NAMM Show, Perri’s will be showcasing its emoji licensed guitar straps and picks. It will also feature other licensed products featuring The Doors, Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, Sublime, Poison, Kiss, Guns & Roses, AC/DC, Rush, Pink Floyd, and David Bowie.
Prestige Guitars – Booth 1228
Prestige Guitars will have our full lineup of award winning electric and acoustic guitars represented at Summer NAMM 2017. At this year’s Summer NAMM, Prestige will be showcasing its brand new 2017 DC Coupe and Signature Series guitars, including Rex Brown and Todd “Dammit” Kerns signature models. Special events are planned so attendees are encouraged to stop by for the full schedule.
Sabian – Booth 215
Sabian will showcase brand new HHX Evolution models, offering more sonic options in one of the company’s most iconic cymbal lines. There will also be a fresh focus on XSR Best in Class cymbals. XSR offers professional B20 sound at a more affordable price for the average drummer. Last, visit the Sabian booth for a plethora of innovative options in stacks.
Temple Audio Design – Booth 1453
Temple Audio Design will showcase its lightweight aluminum guitar pedalboards that feature the Quick Release Pedal Mounting System, a simple method of attaching pedals and power supplies without hook/loop fasteners. Temple’s Modular Endpanels allow artists to easily configure power and audio connectivity on the side of their Templeboard without having to drill holes or solder cables. Temple Audio says it’s sure to have something new and interesting to add to their lineup at every NAMM show.
