The National Post has this great article about Walter Ostanek, who recently won the Dream Lottery’s $1 million grand prize. Walter is widely known as the “Polka King” and was also the founder of Ostanek’s Music in St. Catharines, ON, which is now a Long & McQuade location.
He’s already the Polka King. Now, St. Catharines musician Walter Ostanek can add millionaire to his credentials.
The three-time Grammy winner thought a friend was joking when he told him Tuesday morning he had won $1 million in the London Dream Lottery to benefit London, Ont., hospitals. He remembered entering — he enters everything, he says with a laugh — but his friend had pranked him good before.
This was no prank.
“That’s just the way he is, he’s always joking. He says, ‘No, I’m not joking.’”
Ostanek, 81, was playing his daily gig at Marineland when he got the news. You’d hardly know he just won seven figures — as the Niagara Falls Review caught up with him, he was enjoying a coffee getting ready to play his second set of the day.
He has no plans to quit. “I love it too much,” he said. “I love what I do.
“Things aren’t going to really change a lot in my life,” he added. “It’s just going to make it a little more comfortable to stay. Maybe treat my family a little bit.”
