Counterpoint Musical Services has been named the sole Canadian distributor for the Wood Violins line of electric violins and cellos. The instruments are designed and created by recording artist, performer, producer, inventor, and Emmy-winning composer Mark Wood. Dubbed “the Les Paul of the violin world” by PBS, the Juilliard-trained violinist got the industry’s attention in the early 1970s with his invention of the first solid body electric violin. His signature Viper violin is used by Lady Gaga’s violinist Judy Kang, Carrie Underwood’s violinist Jimmy Herman, and country artist Rachel Barton Pine, among others.
“We visit the NAMM show every year with a list of things our dealers have asked us to look for, and this year one of the things we heard over and over again was that dealers wanted a good quality electric violin, but something ‘different,’” Counterpoint manager Kathleen Stokholm tells Canadian Music Trade. “Well when we walked by the Wood Violin booth and saw Mark Wood with his Viper violin shaped like a flying V guitar seeming to hang suspended in mid-air, we knew we had found our electric violin!”
Counterpoint is planning several upcoming events and initiatives to celebrate the new partnership and establish the brand in the Canadian marketplace.
