Metalworks Institute, Canada’s Elite Entertainment Arts School, is presenting KEYS, the Competition for Canadian High School Keyboard Players.

Trade Regrets: Michael Golden, 1962-2012

CMT regretfully announces the passing of Michael Golden, VP at Erikson Music, on May 11, 2012. Golden was a a well-respected member of the Canadian MI industry and will be greatly missed. Funeral arrangements are as follows. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory may be made to the West Island Palliative Care, 514-693-1718, to Nova West Island, 514-695-8335, or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 514-255-5151.

Trade Regrets: Warren Price, 1941-2012

On April 20, 2012, Warren Price, Founder and Owner of the Mother’s Music chain of music stores, passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family at the age of 70 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Price leaves behind his immediate family, Lloy, his daughter Laurie, daughter Ginger and her husband Al, and four grandchildren Brittini, Olivia, Jason, and Cole.  Read the rest of this entry »

Layton Family Organ Restored

In the fall of 2009, the Schmidt Piano And Organ Service was contacted by Jack Layton, then Leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP), who was seeking to have the family organ restored. During the 1800s, the Layton family was involved in the piano and organ business, distributing and manufacturing pianos and pump or reed organs in and around Montreal. The organ, called The Symphony, was manufactured by the Thomas Organ Company in Woodstock, ON and sold by the Layton Brothers Piano and Organ Showrooms in Montreal. Read the rest of this entry »

MIAC Announces Call For Entries For 2nd Annual MEA Awards

The Music Industries Association of Canada (MIAC) has announced  that it is now accepting entries for its second Annual “MEA Awards” which will take place on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at the MIAC Show. Now in its second year, this program recognizes institutional excellence, individual achievements, and contributions to the Canadian music products market and music making.

Fender Guitars To Go Public

New York — The Associated Press

Fender Musical Instruments Corp. have announced it has filed papers Thursday for a $200-million (U.S.) initial public offering.

Founded in 1946 by Leo Fender, the company created the Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars in the 1950s.

“The Fender brand in particular is closely associated with the birth of rock `n roll and has a strong legacy in music and in popular culture,” the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Read the rest of this entry »

Trade Regrets: Steve Kirman, March 3, 2012

It is with heavy heart that we at Canadian Music Trade announce the passing of Steve Kirman, President and Founder of the Steve’s Music chain of music stores. Kirman died on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

Kirman opened the first Steve’s Music 47 years ago in Montreal in 1965 when he was 19 years old. That store, located at 51 Rue St-Antoine Ouest, remains a landmark in the city, serving a significant segment of its music community. Throughout the years, Steve’s Music opened two additional locations in Toronto and Ottawa.

A funeral service for Kirman will take place at Montreal’s Paperman & Sons (3888 Jean Talon St. W.) on Tuesday, March 6th at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at the Beth Ora Congregation Section, Kehal Israel Cemetery, D.D.O. Shiva to be announced.

CMT extends sympathy to Kirman’s family, friends, and colleagues during this time of mourning.

The new 110,000 sq. ft. building replaces the company’s previous corporate location. NAMM Hits High Note

NAMM has announced the final registration and exhibitor numbers for its 2012 trade show in Anaheim, running this year from January 19-22. At show close, NAMM reported 95,709 registered attendees, a 6 per cent increase from last year and representing a new record for the 110-year-old show. International registration also experienced a 15 per cent increase from last year to 11,981. The association previously reported strong exhibitor numbers, with 1,441 exhibitors at this year’s show, including 236 new exhibitors. Read the rest of this entry »
